THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF THAT SAUNA LIFE
A recent health study from Finland suggests that saunas might just have some health benefits especially for men.
The study which saw more than 2,000 middle-age men spending time in saunas seven times in one week for a period of 20 years showed that men who go to the sauna and spend lots of time are less likely to die from heart problems such as sudden cardiac death, fatal coronary heart disease and fatal cardiovascular disease as compared to those who visit the sauna once a week and stay for short periods.
The study which started in the 1980’s saw more than 2,000 men filling out questionnaires about how frequently they visit the sauna on weekly basis. 1,500 men reported that indeed they use sauna more than once, stating that they visit the sauna at least three times a week, 600 of them stated that they visit the sauna once a week and 200 of them said that they use sauna four to seven days of the week. Only 12 of the more than 2,000 men followed by the researchers said that they do not visit the sauna.
For the sauna, the duration of time which one spent inside ranged from 2 to 90 minutes, in addition to that the temperature of the sauna was monitored and it ranged from 40 to 100 degrees Celsius.
2011 saw the researchers using hospital documents, interviews, death certificates as well as autopsy reports so as to asses when and when a participant died.
In general 190 men had passed away due to cardiac arrest, 407 from cardiovascular disease, 281 died from coronary heart disease while another 929 died from other causes.
